The England midfielder Has to Drop the Nonsense to Reclaim a Central Role Under Manager Thomas Tuchel.

If Jude Bellingham aims to earn his place into England’s top squad, the smart move to do away with the nonsense. His reaction after noticing that he was being shown following a night of inconsistency in Tirana fell short of expectations.

"I prefer not to overstate it but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the teammates who substitute on," stated Tuchel. "Choices are taken and you need to comply when you're on the field."

The midfielder must understand. There was no need for an outburst. Kane had only moments earlier made it the Three Lions leading by two in a meaningless match, with only six minutes remaining and the player, after a below-par performance, received a caution for fouling Armando Broja. It was not a debatable decision. In fact it would have been unwise for the manager to leave Bellingham on because it was possible the midfielder would rule himself out of the opening game of the tournament by receiving a another booking.

Drawing Attention to Himself

Yet Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. It was impossible to miss the young midfielder's disappointment as he realized that he was going to make way for Morgan Rogers. He threw his arms up and although he exchanged a handshake while heading to the touchline it was obvious that Tuchel did not appreciate it.

This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He praised his teammate for delivering the cross for Harry Kane to score the team's second, but everything else was counterproductive. It is not as if complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The German has stressed repeatedly respecting team hierarchies and the value of showing proper conduct.

Under Scrutiny

Bellingham, omitted from last month’s squad, has been under scrutiny after returning to the fold this month. Essentially he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to being taken off as England rounded off a ideal group stage by overcoming a tough opposition from Albania.

The System and the Setup

It means it's unclear on if the squad perform optimally with Bellingham in the team. The evidence here was open to interpretation. Some new ideas were tested from the manager early on. Under him, England have gained the squad organization and direction in recent months, building with a No 6, a central midfielder, a No 10 and specialist wingers, but there was a different feel against Albania. The young defender was given his first cap, the midfielder made his first start at this level and the use of Stones as an auxiliary midfielder meant there was faint echo to City's 2023 treble winners.

A Game of Two Halves

His performance was inconsistent. He set up a shot for Eberechi Eze during the second half but frequently appeared too desperate to impress. He made many poorly executed passes. An unnecessary confrontation against an opponent early on. England were ragged for much of the second half. A scoring chance for the opponents came after Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking came after he was dispossessed to Broja and brought down Broja.

Depth Makes the Difference

In the end England’s depth was decisive. Tuchel introduced Phil Foden, who looked better suited to the position in which Bellingham operated during the first half, and the Arsenal winger. Later Saka whipped in a set-piece for the captain to open the scoring. It highlighted that dead-ball situations will play a key role next summer.

Connection Remains

Still, though, all talk was about Bellingham. The brilliance of the winger's delivery for the second goal was a little lost in the ridiculousness of the substitution incident. At the end, everyone was watching Bellingham. Tuchel walked up behind him and guided the Real Madrid midfielder towards the away supporters. The bond between them remains intact. The coach isn't ready to discard Bellingham yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to give him the central position remains in doubt.
