Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
